This is a gorgeous French Louis XV Revival serpentine antique bureau plat crafted in kingwood and featuring ormolu mounts dating from around 1880.
The quality of this wonderful antique bureau plat has to be seen to believed. The wonderful gilt brass mounts add a level of sophistication that is second to none. The shaped top has a fabulous decorative gilt bronze border with raised corner cartouches and the writing surface is inset green leather with gold tooling.
This amazing antique bureau plat has three oak lined frieze drawers on one side and dummy drawers on the other making it freestanding. With fantastic crossbanded decoration, ormolu handles and mounts and working locks and keys, this is a glorious desk in the quintessential French Louis XV Revival style.Raised on elegant cabriole legs with ormolu mounts and feet, this is a truly spectacular antique bureau plat will be sure to draw amazed attention wherever it is placed.
Kingwood is a classic furniture wood mainly used for inlays on very fine furniture such as this antique bureau plat. The wood is very dense and hard but can be polished up to a spectacular finish and a lovely brownish-purple in colour with many fine darker stripes and the occasional irregular swirl.
Ormolu is an 18th century English term for the process of applying finely ground high-carat gold to a copper, brass or bronze object to produce a gold coloured ‘veneer’. Originally the process used a mercury amalgam containing the gold to coat the object, but when the use of mercury was outlawed around 1830, electroplating was used instead. This fantastic antique bureau plat dating from around 1880 would have used the electroplating method to produce the ormolu (gilt brass) effect.
