James Shoolbred started his company with the purchase of number 155 Tottenham Court Road in the 1820s selling textiles for the growing interior design market. He expanded rapidly to include a haberdashers and carpet warehouse as well as an expanded selection of textiles. He went on to develop the technique of showing a fully furnished and decorated room in his store which encouraged customers to buy the whole ensemble without the need to hire an interior designer.
By the 1870s the company had started to design and make their own furniture which appeared alongside other interior accessories in catalogues which they started to publish from about 1873 onwards. The catalogues were used to expand the appeal of the company beyond the London store. Furniture design became an increasingly important part of the company and their catalogues included all the major fashionable Revival movements ranging from Gothic to Japanese as well a numerous French styles. This wonderful antique cylinder bureau desk was typical of their furniture offerings. Despite its popularity, the company never really recovered from the 1929 crash and they went out of business in 1931.
