Raised on a shaped apron stand, this lovely antique bureau has a pair of half-width and two full width drawers which have brass lock fittings. It comes complete with working locks and keys.
William & Mary period furniture is characterised by being sturdy and emphasising both curves and straight lines. The emphasis is on unity where all the elements contribute to the overall shape or look. The style drew on a variety of influences including Dutch, French, and Italian baroque furniture designs and was very popular in Britain from 1700 to 1725.This antique bureau demonstrates the unity of form extremely well.
Walnut is a popular and attractive wood for furniture making due to its hard, dense and tight-grained nature meaning it can be polished to a very smooth finish. Burr walnut refers to a swirling figure that is found in nearly all walnut especially the wood cuts taken from the base of the tree where the trunk joins the roots. True burr walnut refers to a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow producing some of the most complex and beautiful figuring that can be found in any wood. Burr walnut has been used for centuries for especially fine pieces of furniture such as this antique bureau.
