This antique French bureau plat has a rectangular top with gilt bronze border, raised corner cartouches and a gold tooled green leather inset writing surface, above three frieze drawers on one side and dummy drawers on the other. It goes without saying that all the drawers have working locks and keys. This antique French bureau plat is decorated with ornate ormolu handles and mounts and three solid walnut lined capacious drawers for all of your storage needs. To increase its usefulness even further, it is freestanding and finished on all sides so that it can stand boldly in the centre of a room. Finally, it is raised on elegant cabriole legs with ormolu mounts featuring scallop motifs and hooved feet.
Ormolu, from the French moulu, signifying ground or pounded gold, is an English term, used since the 18th century for the gilding technique of applying finely ground gold–mercury amalgam to a (usually) bronze object. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold coating. The French refer to this technique as ‘bronze doré’ while in English it is known as ‘gilt bronze’.
