Antique Writing Table With Book Troughs

This is an antique writing desk which has been skilfully crafted from the most beautiful mahogany and adorned with fabulous, intricate, inlaid marquetry decoration. This fine antique desk was made around 1880.

The inlay or marquetry work has clearly been carried out by a master craftsman and includes garlands, bell flowers and various shells. What makes this piece really interesting however is the inclusion of book troughs or book stands on either side of the desk.

Plenty of Storage Space with this Antique Writing Table

The role of a desk is of course to provide a comfortable and convenient surface on which to read, write and carry on with your daily business. However, it is also the case with many people that their deks is a place of storage for their stationery, books, documents and other items that may be needed as the day goes by. This antique desk has a total of five drawers, all of which are mahogany lined, and which provide plenty of space for storage needs. This is very much a practical item of furniture, as well as an extremely attractive one.

There are also two slide out writing surfaces, one to either side, for your additional convenience, these too having leather inserts.

 

Sturdy Support for an Elegant Antique Writing Table

This is a very elegant desk, finished on all four sides so that it can be placed anywhere in a room – no need to stand it against a wall. It’s elegance however has not been achieved at the expense of its ability to withstand the rigours of daily use and it is mounted on four deceptively sturdy square tapering legs that each terminate with ormou sabots.

In order to further enhance the appearance and work experience of this desk you will note that it still has it’s original gold-tooled dark tan leather inset. The original handles are also still fitted andfor your security the desk is fitted with working locks together with keys. This is undoubtedly a fine piece of furniture and a useful addition to your study, home office or possibly even a commercial office. It is sure to attract a lot of attention wherever it is placed.
