We are delighted to offer this fabulous late 18th Century Dutch marquetry cylinder bureau

Made from mahogany, it is inlaid with exquisite stylised flowers and foliage and urns. Typical of the period it is covered all over with line-inlay of hand-cut floral marquetry patters, offered for sale at just £5,250.

The writing surface pulls out and raises the cylinder fall to show an amazing interior comprising eight small drawers and secret compartments. There is also two chequer inlaid secret bookends which flank a central cupboard which encloses a small drawer and shelf over a shaped apron. There are also a pair of pigeon holes.

The front of the bureau is a lovely cylinder top over a bombe’ shaped base.

This find items also stands on swept bracket feet. As an additional bonus all the handles and locks are original.

This amazing piece represents one of the finest examples of 18th century Dutch marquetry cabinetry at its best. The technique of wood marquetry was developed in Antwerp during the early 16th century and rapidly became synonymous with the finest and most luxurious cabinetmaking. Imported into France during the mid-seventeenth century, it soon became the height of elegance, particularly when the Gobelins manufactory used it for furniture they made for Louis XIV at Versailles and other royal palaces.

In excellent condition. As it is an 18th Century antique, it does show signs of use in keeping with its age. These minor condition issues are mentioned for accuracy and, as seen in the photographs, the bureau displays extremely well.
