What Is A Davenport Desk?

Davenport Desk usually describes a small desk that has a sloping, lifting, desktop which is attached by hinges to the back of the desk. Located inside the lifting top there is often a large storage compartment which can be used for stationery items. There are also usually other pigeonholes and small drawers included.

A number of side drawers usually hold up the back of the desk and take most of the weight. At the front the desk is supported by carved, sturdy legs or pillars which vary in design according to the maker and period.

Overall the desk could be said to have something of the appearance of an antique school desk placed onto half a pedestal desk which has been turned sideways. The name is attributed to a certain Captain Davenport who first commissioned this design from Gillows of Lancaster in the late 1700s.

Davenport Desks have retained their popularity and we are pleased to be able to offer a good choice for our customers.
