Offered for sale in excellent condition, this is a very ornate and attractive antique William IV library table or William IV writing table in beautiful flame mahogany, that bears the stamp of the renowned and much sought after cabinet makers Johnstone and Jeanes and which dates from around 1840.
A William IV Writing Table with So Many Attractive Features
As we mentioned, this lovely antique library table has been expertly crafted from the most beautiful flame mahogany which has been used to maximum effect by the craftsman involved to bring out the best in this most striking timber. Not only the grain but also the rich deep colour, enhanced by many years of loving care and regular use, will catch the attention of anyone who sees this lovely library table. This is an item to be used, of course, but also admired.
The top of the writing table features a striking gold tooled green leather writing surface which will be a thing of great joy for the new owner – it is always a pleasure to sit down and write or work at such a delightful work space as is provided by this lovely writing surface. Please note that this leather writing surface has been replaced in our workshops.
Although it is tempting to just focus ones attention on this divine writing surface we would also urge potential buyers of this William IV library table to take a close look at the rather beautiful hand carved decorations to the base and feet of the piece.
A Word About The Makers Johnstone & Jeanes
These celebrated cabinet makers were based at 67 New Bond Street in London from 1842 until 1880 and run by John Johnstone. Before becoming Johnstone & Jeanes, John Johnstone along with Robert Jupe created the most amazing metamorphic table called the Jupe Table in the William IV period of 1835. It was a circular table that could have leaves added to make it larger in size.
Plenty of Storage on this William IV Writing Table
Yes – the makers of this fine William IV library table did give some thought to the subject of storage space. If you need a lot of storage space then a library table is probably not the best choice but for more moderate requirements this table certainly has more than enough with its two spacious drawers on one side with dummy drawers being fitted on the other side making the table suitable for placement anywhere in a room with no need to place it against a wall.
