Notes on Ormolu and Marquetry
Ormolu (taken from the French for ground or pounded gold ‘or molu’) is an 18th century English term. It describes the application of high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to a bronze object. When driven off in a kiln this leaves the bronze finely gilded with a gold-coloured veneer known as ‘gilt bronze’. Mercury is no longer used, but the process of gilding with finely ground gold continues using electroplating over a nickel substrate.
The technique of veneered marquetry developed from techniques used in 16th century Florence where they inlaid solid marble slabs with designs made out of fitted marbles, jaspers and semi-precious stones. The idea was taken up in Antwerp and other Flemish centers and applied to luxury cabinet making in the early 16th century, and was then imported into France during the mid-seventeenth century to make highly ornate items to furnish the royal palaces and chateaux of French nobility.
