Here at Desirable Desks we are always delighted to offer outstanding antique desks and this Victorian freestanding pedestal desk is a superb example. Dating from around 1880, this wonderful antique desk is crafted in flame mahogany and crossbanded kingwood.
Thomas Sheraton, the famous 18th century furniture designer, thought that mahogany was the perfect wood for making furniture where strength was needed such as with this antique desk. Flame mahogany has a flame figure in the wood, revealed by cutting through the face of a mahogany branch at the point where the branch joins another part of the tree. Kingwood is a rare and beautiful wood usually used for inlays. It is extremely hard and this means it can be difficult to work using hand tools. However, because it can be brought to a spectacular finish, furniture makers persevered with it and using it only in the finest furniture where its unique properties could be shown off to best effect.
As with any antique desk one of the most important features is the writing surface. With very elegantly moulded ogee edges, the writing surface of this desk is made of green gold tooled leather and provides a superb hand writing experience reminiscent of the days when all major business was done by handwritten correspondence. With this in mind the Victorians were very keen to ensure that their desk surfaces were of the highest quality and this desk certainly displays that. The desk is also large enough to accommodate a computer if handwriting no longer appeals!
Another important feature of any antique desk is the storage. This desk features an ample amount with three drawers in each pedestal and three drawers across in the frieze. These provide a wonderful amount of space to store stationery and papers in style. The frieze drawers are ideal for storing writing equipment.
This is a beautifully preserved desk and has all the original handles, locks and brass and ceramic castors in place. The keys and locks are in full working order making this a fully functioning desk where you can also store private items away from prying eyes.
Representing the elegance of a bygone era, this wonderful antique desk will grace any home or office.
